Hitachi will introduce a super-large 85 inch plasma screen later this year. Makoto Ebata, president and CEO of Hitachi’s consumer business group says that the new model will help the brand increase its market share of 50-inch and over screens to 30 per cent by 2010.
Overall Hitachi says that it’s aiming for a 20 per cent share of the plasma market by the end of the decade. The company recently opened a third japanese panel making facility giving it a total capacity of 2 million screens a year. “That capacity level yields profit,” expains Ebata.
Hitachi predicts that the plasma screen market will double from the 9.3 million units sold in 2006 to 20 million in 2010. It also estimates that LCD TV sales will rocket from 28.5 million units to 110 million during the same period.
