Michael Grade wades in Freeview HD debate

April 25th, 2007 · No Comments

TV chairman Michael Grade has stepped into the Freeview debate. The UK’s best-known broadcast power-player has warned against creating an HD divide. Speaking at a conference organized by the Voice of the Listener and Viewer, he said an “HD divide, with high definition open only to those willing and able to pay” would be an “own goal” for the industry, adding: “Closing the door to HD on Freeview would undermine that principle at precisely the point we finally achieve universality for digital television. There’s a real risk that the UK, historically the envy of the world in this area, will start to slip behind the rest of the international pack in terms of the technical quality of its broadcasting.”
