Microsoft pays high price for Zune and Xbox

Adventures with the and continue to cost Microsoft dearly. The software giant has reported a 20 per cent decline in third-quarter revenue for its entertainment and devices division. Revenue dropped from 1.2 billion dollars to 929 million dollars. In a statement, the company said: “EDD revenue decreased during the three months ended March 31, 2007 primarily because of decreased Xbox 360 console sales. During the quarter, we shipped 0.5 million Xbox 360 consoles as compared to 1.7 million consoles in the third quarter of fiscal year 2006, which was the first full quarter of Xbox 360 console sales. Xbox and PC game revenue decreased 393 million dollars or 44 per cent during the three months ended March 31, 2007 due to the decrease in console sales.”
To date Micosoft has sold 11 million 360s while Xbox Live has 6 million subscribers. The introduction of Vista and Office 2007 saw Redmond Corp’s revenue rise to 14.4 billion dollars, up from 10.9 billion last year.
