Simultaneous European DVD and VOD release for 300

June 6th, 2007 · No Comments

Warner will make the Spartan box-office smash 300 available on VOD in Europe simultaneously with its DVD debut.
Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Home Entertainment, said that recent tests of day and date VOD/DVD movie releases in the US did not lead to any cannibalisation of sales. In fact the trial, conducted by Comcast Communications and Time Warner Cable, saw a 50 per cent increase in VOD purchases and a 10 per cent increase in DVD sales.
“When you look at what can impact our margins and bottom line over the next 24 months, we think VOD on a global basis is probably one of the most significant pieces of our business,” said Tsujihara.  Studios like Warner can make more money through VOD than physical media sales. 300 will get its day and date VOD/DVD release in Belgium and Scandinavia. Other territories may also be announced.
In related news, leading US CE chain Best Buy has reorganized its entertainment division, giving greater emphasis to its download business. The division, which Best Buy describes as ‘organised around market strategies and customer solutions’ and accounts for 18 per cent of company revenue, is widely expected to begin offering a movie download service alongside its online music store.
