PS3 woes lead to more Sony job cuts

June 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Sony continues to cut back staff in its games divisions. After announcing plans to axe 160 European jobs in April, the Japanese giant has now trimmed between 50 and 100 positions from its American workforce; it may also restructure in Japan.
Said SCEA spokesman Dave Karraker: “In an effort to accurately align the company to meet the changing needs of our consumers and of our industry, Sony Computer Entertainment America has found it necessary to analyze our current business and to restructure the company as necessary to continue our standing as a market leader.”
The company maintains that the layoffs are not directly related to the disappointing performance of the at retail.
In its last financial report, Sony’s games operation posted an operating loss of 232 billion Yen.
As the PS3 continues to struggle against the Nintendo Wii, discussions about a price cut have rapidly moved from if to how much. Anything less than a 100 dollar reduction now looks unlikely to impress analysts.
