New HD disc format bags Apocalypto, heads for Tesco

June 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Bizarro HD format HD VMD claims to have secured distribution rights for box office hits Apocalypto, The Queen and The Descent, for Australia and New Zealand. The titles are part of a bigger licensing deal that London based format proposer New Medium Enterprises has inked with studio Icon. NME boss Mahesh Jayanarayan says “Icon is a distinguished player in international film, with strong current releases and a library of well-known titles that have made an impact on audiences worldwide. We look forward to expanding the global HD VMD content catalog with high quality titles.”
Unlike or , HD VMD is a red-laser hi def system which threatens to debut later this year, priced around 199 dollars or less. Given the rapidly falling price of both HD DVD and Blu-ray, this cheapo HD format alternative might not seem such a compelling proposition, but its backers have hinted that a deal to distribute the format via Tesco in the UK is on the cards. If it goes ahead, expect even greater consumer confusion in the HD consumer marketplace.
