HD DVD Group promises 1,000 indie movies for the format

July 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

The promotional group has announced the ‘1,000 HD DVD Indies Project.’ A joint venture between Amazon and Microsoft, it claims the move could bring a thousand new movie titles to the hi-def disc format. Independent studios will be offered free authoring and setup services. Amazon will manufacture the HD DVD movies on demand and act as sole distributor. The project will be administered by Amazon’s CustomFlix DVD-on-demand service.
Dana LoPiccolo-Giles, CustomFlix co-founder and managing director says “From a technical standpoint, we found that the HD DVD format fits our business model perfectly.”
Microsoft’s Amir Majidimehr adds: “Amazon’s participation in this project will be a major benefit to independent filmmakers wanting to break into the high-definition market segment. The use of Microsoft technology and authoring expertise will ensure that all the HD DVD titles offered by Amazon have impeccable quality, thanks to the VC-1 codec and innovative interactive scenarios with HDi.”
