Apple iPhone hacked with soldering iron

August 28th, 2007 · No Comments

A New Jersey teenager has hacked Apple’s with a soldering iron, allowing it to be used with carriers other than AT&T in the US. 17 year old George Hotz says his procedure can also allow iPhones made for the US market to be used overseas. It’s unlikely that ordinary consumers will make the hack though. Even Hotz admits the work is “complicated.”
A second hack, using a different methodology, has also been touted online. The iPhone is scheduled for a European launch later this year, with carriers yet to be announced.
