The exclusivity deals for HD DVD which have been signed by Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG may have leveled the playing field with rival Blu-ray – but the balance of power is only temporary. The catch is that the deals are only in place for 18 months, although it’s conceivable that they may be renewed. Even so, some commentators believe this may buy enough time to swing the HD war in the favour of HD DVD. Eight of the top 15-grossing movies of 2007 now come from HD DVD exclusive studios, and the first generation of low-cost HD DVD players will debut in months.
