Philips says it has developed PVR-preference technology to rival that of TiVo. The new software is able to ‘learn’ a viewer’s TV preferences via the use of the remote control, and allows the creation of a Personal TV Channel based on programme choices. Software will then examine EPG data and refine the channel. By comparison, TiVo learns its users viewing preferences via a Thumbs up/Thumbs down programme tagging system.
The Philips system can also look for suitable content online, from services such as YouTube. Philips Personal TV Channel will debut as PC software first, before being introduced into its settop boxes next year.
