Region coding hassle delays HD DVD Hairspray

September 12th, 2007 · No Comments

New Line Home Entertainment says that it will support both and formats, but in a twist, says it will give certain releases a Blu-ray window of exclusivity because of the lack of region coding on HD DVD.
Consequently, the studio will launch hit musical Hairspray on November 20 in the US, but will hold back the HD DVD disc until early 2008. This is the first time Hollywood has cited regional coding as a reason to stagger dual format releases. Explains Matt Lasorsa, New Line’s EVP of marketing: “There isn’t a format winner at this point, so we’re going to adopt the strategy from Warner, our sister company, and support both formats.” Lasora adds that movies to which the studio doesn’t have international rights will be released day and date in all formats.
