If you’re waiting for a clear winner in the HD format war, you could be kicking your heels for some time to come. Aggressive positioning from both Blu-ray and HD DVD camps will ensure that both HD disc formats are forced to co-exist for the foreseeable future, with no clear winner emerging. So concludes a report from UK-based market research group Screen Digest. But while the format war will slow down consumer take-up of HD packaged media, Hollywood is still in line for a substantial windfall. Screen Digest suggests that consumer spending on hi-def discs will rocket to 1.55 billion dollars in 2008. As a consequence, it predicts, it will only be a matter of time before the majority of studios capitulate and begin to offer their titles in both formats.
