Sony will no longer release DVD recorders in Japan. Instead it will concentrate exclusively on hi-def Blu-ray recorders. The announcement comes after four highly specified BD recorders, able to record and burn HD using the highly efficient MPEG-4 AVC format, were announced for the Japanese market. In Japan, interest in time-shifting high definition eclipses play-only HD discs, with a wide range of HD programming is available for recording, via terrestrial and satellite delivery. The strategy is unlikely to be followed outside of Japan.
