Influential US retailer Target is devoting twice as much space to Blu-ray releases as it does HD DVD. Trade magazine Video business has noted that in many Target stores, 24 title bays are allocated to BD, with only 12 assigned to HD DVD. In October, the store will also offer a single HD disc player for sale, Sony’s BDP-S300.
It remains to be seen if the format balance remains the same when box-office hits from Universal and Dreamworks ship exclusively in the HD DVD format. Titles will include Transformers and Shrek the Third. Paramount’s chief technology officer Alan Bell says that the store is “mostly standing back,” from the HD debate, “as consumers still are to some degree.” Target has made no official comment on the observations.
