New PlayStation3 to snub SACD

October 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Super Audio CD, Sony’s favoured high resolution audio format, has suffered a significant blow with the news that compatibility will be dropped from the new, cheaper . The 299 pound console revision also has a smaller 40GB hard drive, two USB ports instead of the four and no memory card port. It also removes backwards compatibility with PS2 games.
Once stock of the original 60GB version with SACD is exhausted, it will not be replaced.
SACD advocates within Sony once believed that the console would act as a Trojan horse for the audio format, much as it’s doing with movie playback. However, the likelihood is that as the new, cheaper-to-produce console is rolled out globally, SACD functionality will be completely forgotten.
