HD discs will succeed says Sony, but interest remains low

The success of hi-def packaged media is inevitable. So says Don Eklund, technology chief of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Speaking at the recent HDTV DisplaySearch conference in the US, Eklund explained that the emphasis satellite broadcasters are putting on HD is raising the expectations of viewers generally, “indoctrinating people to high-def and by extension high-def packaged media like .”
Currently HD disc players account for approximately 5 per cent of the DVD player market, but the actual value is much higher because of the cost of players. By way of comparison, upscaling DVD players command a much larger 27 per cent of the disc market. However, interest in HD still seems to be low. A survey of US consumers reveals that only 11 per cent were actively looking to purchase an HD player.
