The LCD TV camp will take the slimming battle to OLED at next week’s FPD display show in Yokohama, Japan. Leading OEM LCD panel maker AU Optronics (AUO) has promised to unveil a 32-inch panel just 19mm thick. Other cutting edge tech from the brand includes a reduction in power consumption, said to be half that of current panels, improved colour gamut through proprietary HiColor picture processing and improved off-axis viewing courtesy of the company’s Advanced Multidomain Vertical Alignment (AMVA) viewing angle technology. Interestingly, AUO has opted not to develop LED backlighting for its next-gen LCD TVs, instead choosing to further refine conventional cold-cathode florescent (CCFL) back-lighting, principally because it lends itself better to reductions in power consumption.
