LCD makers take slimming battle to OLED at FPD show

October 18th, 2007 · No Comments

The camp will take the slimming battle to at next week’s FPD display show in Yokohama, Japan. Leading OEM LCD panel maker AU Optronics (AUO) has promised to unveil a 32-inch panel just 19mm thick. Other cutting edge tech from the brand includes a reduction in power consumption, said to be half that of current panels, improved colour gamut through proprietary HiColor picture processing and improved off-axis viewing courtesy of the company‚Äôs Advanced Multidomain Vertical Alignment (AMVA) viewing angle technology. Interestingly, AUO has opted not to develop LED backlighting for its next-gen LCD TVs, instead choosing to further refine conventional cold-cathode florescent (CCFL) back-lighting, principally because it lends itself better to reductions in power consumption.
