Freeview HD dream not dead yet says Ofcom

October 29th, 2007 · No Comments

While media regulator Ofcom still refuses to reserve new spectrum space for terrestrial high definition broadcasting, it says that the dream of Freeview HD isn’t dead yet. Ofcom’s Ed Richards says that there is still a way to deliver the extra space required for , without sacrificing revenue from the sale of redundant analogue frequency bands. He refuses to be drawn on exactly how this will be achieved; saying only that it was technically possible to clear an entire multiplex, allowing it to be converted to an MPEG-4-based compression and transmission standard.
Ofcom believes that such a move would create “for the first time, a migration path for the entire Freeview platform which would offer an enormous increase in capacity.” Richards denied that Ofcom has shown insufficient interest in high definition technology and agreed that HD provides viewers with an “improved experience.”
