October 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Reports of the PS2’s imminent demise, killed off not by falling consumer demand but Sony’s need to focus eyes and wallets on the under-performing , may be exaggerated. To mark the console’s seventh anniversary, Sony has announced it will ship a limited edition ceramic white version for the holiday season. The model will sell for 150 dollars in the US, but a European release has not been confirmed. Since its launch in 2000, the PS2 has sold a staggering 120 million units, ensuring a steady flow of new games. Sony says that it is fully committed to a ten-year product cycle for the console, which will guarantee availability until at least 2010.
Explains Jack Tretton, President and Chief Executive Officer for SCEA: “Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale.”
