Blu-ray Association reneges on Profile 1.1 mandate

October 31st, 2007 · No Comments

The Disc Association’s mandate that all BD players launched after October 31 should conform to Profile 1.1 has been junked. BDA chair Andy Parsons says that the Association will now not object if companies fail to abide by the recommendation. The announcement will do little to protect unsuspecting consumers from buying first generation players ill-equipped to play advanced BD movie titles.
Samsung’s upcoming dual-format BD/HD DVD player falls foul of the original Halloween mandate. While it complies to some aspects of Profile 1.1 , it is known to be incompatible with upcoming BD Java PIP discs. A further firmware update will be required.
The Association is now dubbing Profile 1.1 as ‘Bonus View.’ Explains Parsons: “The key point is to get to the transition to Bonus View. We don’t want to get bureaucratic.”
