LCD and plasma TVs more reliable than CRT technology

November 7th, 2007 · No Comments

LCD and plasma TVs are proving to be more reliable than their CRT and rear projection predecessors. According to data released by US consumer advice group Consumer Reports, research indicates that flatscreens are so dependable extended warranties are not necessary. Only 3 per cent of new screens were found to fail during their warranty period. The most common failing of LCD screens involved the backlight, and this usually occurred during the standard warranty period. The survey covered almost 93,000 TV sets bought between 2004 and 2007.
The most reliable TV was deemed to be Panasonic’s 50-inch plasma, the TH-50PZ700U, which has a 2 per cent repair rate.  Other top performing brands and products were LCD TVs from Samsung, Sony, JVC and Toshiba and plasma screens from Pioneer and Samsung.
