The internet’s favourite compression technology is headed to the PlayStation 3. DivX Inc has done a deal with Sony to have its highly economic MPEG-4 compression included as part of the console’s next firmware update.
Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, says: “Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.” The company says there are currently around 100 million devices available that can play files in the format.
