Potential buyers for Samsung’s much-touted first combination format HD disc player, the BD-UP5000, are running out of patience. Despite being promised a pre-Christmas delivery, the model has still to make its US debut. Some retailers now say the player will not be available until mid-January, at the earliest. The combi-deck is the first to promise full functionality for both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. In light of sliding prices for both Sony’s PlayStation 3 and the Toshiba HD DVD player range, the Korean maker now says that it has slashed the US street price of the BD-UP5000 by 200 bucks, to 799 dollars.
