Samsung to challenge Sony with 31inch OLED TV

January 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

One of the main talking points at the upcoming Vegas CES is certain to be the rise of OLED TV technology. Korean giant Samsung is expected to throw down the gauntlet to rival Sony with a prototype 31-inch model. Produced by Samsung SDI, the screen has a lifespan of 35,000 hours. This is good for the technology but crucially only half of what can offer.
Currently Sony claims the high-ground, having introduced the world’s first commercially available OLED TV; the 11-inch XEL-1model debuted in Japan in December. At the CES in January, Sony will reveal a launch date for the US edition.
Consumers should not expect to upgrade to an OLED TV just yet though. According to Paul Gagnon, an analyst with DisplaySearch, OLED will not be in a position to challenge LCD in the commercial marketplace until at least 2015.
