HD DVD camp set for string of heart attacks

January 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Is HD DVD suddenly on life support? Reacting to Warner’s decision to support only Blu-ray, Toshiba issued the following statement before canceling its CES press activity: “We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and valuate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer.”
So what happens next? Much will depend now on the format’s remaining studio supporters. Paramount is thought to have a get-out clause that will enable it to step away from its HD DVD exclusive position in certain circumstances. It looks likely that other studios will now take a breathing space to reassess the hi-def landscape.
