Name change for Panasonic

January 11th, 2008 · No Comments

In what was bound to have been a controversial move internally, Matsushita Electric is to drop the name of its founder and rebrand itself with the monkier most people know: Panasonic. Tradition has always been a key part of the Panasonic company, which has funded a museum about the life and times of founder Konosuke Matsushita and expounded his business philosophy. The company says its will also drop its long-standing Japanese sub-brand National, which has been used for home appliances since 1927.
Speaking in Japan, Matsushita president Fumio Otsubo explained: “By unifying our company name and product branding, we will strengthen the ties within our group and improve our brand value. We will be able to concentrate on one brand.” The change comes into effect from October 1.
