As expected, Sony is discontinuing the 60GB and 20GB versions of its PlayStation 3 in Japan, in favour of theĀ streamlined and more profitable 40GB iteration. Spokesman Sosuke Kamei says the move will “help boost software development for the platform.” As supplies dwindle, only the US will be left with two iterations of the games console. Cost reductions and not software releases have helped turn the tide for the system, enabling it to make some progress in its fight with the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360.
