Life is good for next-gen games makers

All three games giants are smiling as sales of their next-gen systems boom. Nintendo leads the pack, saying that its profits for the first nine months of the fiscal year have doubled. The company has sold more than 20 million machines worldwide. Sales have risen 84.7 per cent YOY in the same period, from 1.316 trillion yen from 712.59 billion. Nintendo is now making 1.8 million Wiis a month.
Microsoft is also smiling after its Entertainment and Devices Division announced its second in profit quarter in a row, after years of making losses. The group has announced 357 million dollars in operating income for the period.
Not to be outdone, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s president and CEO David Reeves has been talking up his , boasting that the console will overtake sales of the Xbox 360 by Summer. Talking to trade magazine MCV he says that in December Sony sold over a million PlayStation 3s across all PAL territories, with around 20 per cent going into the UK. He says: “We don’t often mention the competition, but I will give you some interesting data: In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy, plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland, our current cumulative installed base is now higher than Xbox 360.”
