Sonic drops pro-HD DVD authoring development

January 31st, 2008 · No Comments

One of the leading pro-authoring companies is turning its back on HD DVD. Sonic Solutions has confirmed that it’s pulling the plug on its Scenarist HD DVD suite. The company says that it wants to concentrate on Blu-ray authoring, developing creation software for web-enabled BD Live features. Clients which have HD DVD authoring tools will be offered a swap to its Blu-ray equivalent.
However, the company says its move is not a comment on the format war, merely a reflection on the growing needs of the content-creation industry.
Sonic president Dave Habiger, says: “We are aligning our professional product portfolio to address the evolving needs of our high-end customers. Our Professional Products Group plays a significant role in supporting the development of high-definition formats, including the contribution of core IP to HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc joint portfolio licenses. Going forward, the group will direct its considerable format expertise on helping our professional customers fulfill the richly interactive promise of Blu-ray Disc, including BD-Live.”
The company says it also wants to develop its digital distribution business.
Sonic adds that it will continue to offer both HD DVD and Blu-ray editing and authoring packages under its consumer Roxio brand.
