HD DVD refuses to roll over and play dead

February 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Sales of standalone HD DVD players continue to claw back market share from Blu-ray machines. Market data collected by The NPD Group is expected to reveal that US sales through the week ending January 26 still gave HD DVD players 28 per cent of the market, albeit some way behind Blu-ray at 65 per cent. The remainder sales went to combo Blu-ray HD DVD units.
Ross Rubin, the NPD Group’s industry analysis director, explains: “It has only been a couple of weeks since the Warner announcement as well as Toshiba’s price promotions, Microsoft’s lowering the price on its HD DVD Xbox peripheral and the HD DVD Super Bowl ad. So, the story continues to evolve. The two formats ended 2007 essentially in a dead heat. Until one camp decides to give up its format we are going to continue to see confusion at retail.”
