European Blu-ray disc sales top two million

February 13th, 2008 · No Comments

The total number of Blu-ray movies sold across Europe has soared past two million units. Speaking at a BDA press Event in London yesterday, the Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee confirmed that the latest Gfk figures put total sales at 2.37million. This means 79 per cent of hi-def movie discs bought by consumers year-to-date across Europe were BD, compared with 21 per cent in the HD DVD format.
Interestingly, the two million milestone was reached just two months after notification of the one millionth sale, no doubt due to a seasonal rush. The biggest Christmas seller was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End with sales of nearly 100,000 units.
The BDA says that the figures are a graphic illustration of Blu-ray’s rapid establishment when compared with the early days of DVD: “DVD was first introduced into Western Europe in 1997, and the following year some 230,000 DVD players and 2 million discs sold. In comparison, Blu-ray made its first tentative European launch in 2006, and the following year some 3.2 million PS3s and 34,000 standalone players were installed with 2.3 million Blu-ray discs sold.”
Nicola Cartwright, the UK Managing Director of Lions Gate Home Entertainment says: “In 2007 Blu-ray accounted for about 6 per cent of our disc sales. I see this rising to around 10 per cent in 2008. Our challenge now is not in fighting a format war, but in our commitment to continually push the capabilities of Blu-ray and to work closely with our retailers to enable consumers to enjoy an increasingly enriched world of home entertainment.”
Her thoughts were echoed by Frank Simonis, Chairman of the BDA European Promotions Committee: “News from Warner Bros at CES last month caught the headlines but what this news proves is that the tipping point in the format war in Europe happened several months prior to CES and the tide has been running strongly in favour of Blu-ray Disc for many months. Our challenge now is to move Blu-ray Disc into the mainstream and accelerate awareness of all the applications of the BD format, such as BonusView and BDLive.”
