Toshiba prepares official HD DVD exit strategy

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Toshiba has begun an internal review of its HD DVD business, the first step toward officially bowing out of its battle with Blu-ray. The decision to halt the production and sales of HD DVD hardware is expected to cost the company dearly, but the format’s position has seemingly become untenable at retail level. Last Friday US retail Goliath Wal-Mart declared that it would only sell Blu-ray players in its 4000 stores going forward.
Toshiba’s board will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) when a decision to withdraw is likely to be made. News of Toshiba’s likely pull-out has benefited its stock value. In morning trading, stock rose 6.4 per cent and some analysts have raise their rating on Toshiba from Neutral to Buy.
