Matsushita, parent of Panasonic, says it will spend 66 billion yen to take a majority stake in LCD panel maker IPS Alpha Technology. The operation was a joint venture between Matsushita, Hitachi and Toshiba, however going forward, IPS Alpha becomes a division of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.
IPS Alpha is planning to build a new LCD factory in Himeji City, Japan, worth 300 billion yen. It will open for business in January 2010 with a capacity of 15 million 32 inch screens a year, rising to 21 million by 2013. The principal beneficiaries of the new screens will be Panasonic and Hitachi. Toshiba is selling its stake in the IPS operation and will partner with Sharp’s upcoming panel making venture.
