Pioneer to drop plasma, full LCD TV range to be introduced

February 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Pioneer will drop its 42inch plasma TV line when it begins to sell LCD screens supplied by Sharp later this year. The news is the first Pioneer range change since Sharp purchased a chunk of the ailing plasma maker in 2007. The announcement is expected to be confirmed when the company makes its financial statement in March.
According to a story on Australian website smarthouse.com.au, Pioneer will announce a full-range of LCD TVs up to 50 inches. Pioneer will continue to supply its own 50 and 60-inch Kuro plasma panels.
Despite critical acclaim, the company has struggled to compete as TV prices have plunged worldwide. A spokesman said: “The arrangement with Sharp will allow us to offer plasma at the high end and LCD, while also allowing us to compete in the popular sized LCD TV market where we were unable to compete in the past with plasma due to manufacturing problems and cost of development.”
