Amid mounting concern over energy-hungry flat-panel TVs, Japan says is will soon mandate tighter energy-saving standards for both LCD and plasma televisions. The move is part of a wider initiative to cut global warming emissions from households. Japanese appliances must already carry an energy star label, to indicate their power consumption.
Panasonic says that it has already developed new technology which will reduce by half the power consumption of its plasma panels, without reducing brightness. These new super-effecient screens will be introduced worldwide during 2009/10.
