South Korea announces digital switch-over, mirrors the UK

February 27th, 2008 · No Comments

South Korea is the latest country to announce a transition from analogue to digital TV services, and like the UK it’ll switch in 2012. However there are fears that viewers who don’t already receive their TV via satellite or cable are ill-prepared for the December 31 cutoff. To help, 60.8 billion won will be spent subsidizing digital reception equipment.
The date was approved by a special committee on broadcasting and communication. “The transition of terrestrial TV to digital signals will provide video and audio quality six to seven times clearer than analogue broadcasting. It will also contribute to the nation’s economy by creating new markets in related industries,” a government spokesman said.
