Price crash predicted for Sony Blu-ray players

March 6th, 2008 · No Comments

The price of a Sony Blu-ray player will hit 200 dollars by 2009. That’s the view of a man who should know. Sony Electronics US president Stan Glasgow made the prediction during the company’s recent press briefing. Players are expected to close out in 2008 at around 299 dollars. Glasgow also predicts that dedicated player sales will hit 5 million this year, with around 80 per cent being sold in the US.
Glasgow also said that it would be at least a decade before Blu-ray and DVD sales were “derailed” by downloading. Of Blu-ray’s recent format victory, he adds “the battle really begins now to move people away from DVD to Blu-ray. We have a lot of work to do now, so we are not gloating. Upscale DVD players have gotten better and better. We need to explain the additional feature sets, PIP, BD live and other features.”
