Forget hi-def, Freeview needs Local TV services

March 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Forget high-def. What we really need on Freeview is amateur local TV channels. That’s the view of 120 MPs who have backed an Early Day Motion to turn over spectrum space on terrestrial digital TV to local TV services. The move follows campaigning by a group called United for Local Television, which seeks to secure channel 6 as a UK-wide network of neighbourhood channels.
The group proposes to have services up and running by 2012. Labour MP Ian Stewart, chairman of an all party parliamentary group on community media, says: “UK citizens are amongst the least well served in the entire democratic world for access to local news and information from television.”
“No matter where you live in the UK, Channel 6 would be a local channel offering local news, local programming and local advertising. Channel 6 would also carry ‘networked’ public service content,” promise the campaigners.
