Retailer offers goodwill gesture to HD DVD owners

March 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Leading US retail chain Best Buy has followed the lead set by rival Circuit City, and has begun to compensate its customers who backed HD DVD. It will send owners of players on its database a 50 dollar gift voucher; the giveaway applies to any of its patrons who purchased an HD DVD player prior to February 23. The goodwill gesture does not require the HD DVD owner to return their player.
Brian Dunn, Best Buy’s president and COO, says: “At Best Buy, we understood and shared our customers’ frustrations as they were being asked to choose one format or the other. Now that the format war is over, we hope these gift cards will reassure our customers that we will help them make a smooth transition into the right technology for their needs.”
High-street CE retailers in the UK do not appear to be following suite, seemingly preferring to take the money and run.
