Blu-ray population to hit 29 million this year

March 27th, 2008 · No Comments

Despite growing interest in downloads and streaming, the number of Blu-ray capable homes worldwide will hit 29 million by the end of 2008. So predicts a report from market researchers Strategy Analytics. The BD player population will rise to 132 million by 2012. It’s expected that the PS3 will remain the dominant BD player until at least 2010, says the report. David Mercer, Principal Analyst for the service, says: “The 265 million homes will own an HDTV by 2012, and Hollywood’s need for a new growth engine, represent huge incentives for the industry to coordinate marketing activities and demonstrate unified support for the successor to DVD.”
