Star Trek fans who have been waiting for the newly remastered Original Series to migrate from HD DVD to Blu-ray will be disappointed by Paramount’s announcement that reissues will continue on DVD only.
The HD DVD camp made quite a ballyhoo after the first season of Trek:TOS debuted on its hi-def format, following an impressive remastering program that saw special effects upgraded and the original 35mm film restored. It was widely thought that the HD DVD group contributed to the cost of the project. Now, with HD DVD lost in deep space, Paramount says the August 5 debut for Season Two Remastered will launch in standard def only, and there are no immediate plans to reissue Season One on Blu-ray.
