A cartoon superhero has become the Korean goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Robot Taekwon V will take the role normally reserved for living, breathing humans.

The 32-year-old ‘toon hero (pictured above) was announced as the country’s ambassador at the recent Taekwon V Celebration 2008. “Taekwon V is a character that protects the weak and gives hope and courage to people,” proclaimed Janice Lyn Marshall, representative of the Seoul bureau of the UNHCR. “He is more than perfect to be the goodwill ambassador of UNHCR. The character has been adored by Koreans through many generations, so we hope this will be a chance to remind them of refugee problems in Korean society.”
Robot Taekwon V has become a staple of the Korean animation scene since his debut in 1976, and has been immortalized in TV cartoons, comic books and toys. Anime experts will recognize him as a derivation of popular Japanese hero Mazinger Z.
The robot hero is expected to return to the big-screen after discharging his duties to the UN. A big-budget reboot will debut in Korean cinemas next year.
