Koreans copy dog, start Clone Wars

August 6th, 2008 · No Comments

The world’s first commercial pet cloning business has effectively opened for business, after South Korean scientists confirmed the cloning of five pit bull puppies from a dead ‘parent’ called Booger. The clones were born in Seoul last week.
The success of the project is expected to herald the beginning of a global pet cloning industry.
The puppies were created by a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer, wherein DNA from Booger’s ear was transferred to eggs with removed nuclei; these were then inserted into the uterus of a surrogate pooch. Booger’s original owner, American Bernann McKinney, has named the copies Booger McKinney, Booger Ra, Booger Lee, Booger Hong and Booger Park.
The company behind the project is RNL Bio, a Seoul-based biotech firm which now claims worldwide exclusive rights for dog cloning. However this claim has been challenged by Start Licensing, a Texas-based firm which holds the rights to other cloning technologies developed during the Dolly the sheep era.
Lawsuits are expected. It looks like the first real clone wars have begun.
