“PlayStation 3 possesses a winning combination of cutting-edge technologies in the form of its Cell processor, RSX graphics chip and Blu-ray Disc drive which together deliver a unique High Definition entertainment experience for its users,” so said Nick Sharples, Director, Corporate Communications, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe at the Blu-ray Disc Association press conference at IFA, Berlin.
“Blu-ray Disc is a critical enabling technology which sits at the heart of PS 3, and is key to its success as a truly High Definition entertainment system.”
Sharples confirmed that PS 3 will be launched in Europe on 17 November and predicted that around two million units will be shipped in Europe by the end of March 2007, with over six million units shipped worldwide. Storage requirements for these new games are up to five times higher than standard definition counterparts. Sharples confirmed that all PS 3 games will be delivered on a single Blu-ray Disc. Systems that still use DVD storage could require two or even three discs to deliver similar High Definition games, and provide a far less intuitive and user friendly experience. (more…)
At IFA, Philips exhibited its first range of Blu-ray Disc products, including the Showline Media Center MCP9480i, the TripleWriter SPD7000 multi-format PC drive, the BDP9000 Blu-ray Disc player and a full scope of Blu-ray Disc media, including single-layer BD-R (Recordable) and BD-RE (Recordable and Erasable) discs.
